QATAR Petrochemical Co (Qapco) expects sales of its products in Malaysia to increase fourfold next year, as it starts selling a linear low-density polyethylene (LLDPE) plastic films here.

Director and general manager Dr Mohammed Yousef Al-Mulla said it targets to sell up to 15,000 tonnes of LLDPE to Malaysian customers in 2010.

"There is huge demand for LLDPE in Malaysia," he told reporters after the opening of Qapco's local representative office in Kuala Lumpur yesterday.

He said demand for the LLDPE here could range from 10,000 tonnes to 15,000 tonnes in the first year.

For more than 20 years, the company sold only low-density polyethylene (LDPE) to customers in the country, with sales volume amounting to 6,000 tonnes in 2008 alone.

Qapco expects to sell a similar amount of LDPE this year and 2010.

"The market price for a tonne of LDPE is around US$1,400 (RM4,816).

"Among LDPE, LLDPE and HDPE, the former is the most expensive. The difference is about US$100 (RM344) a tonne each," he added.

LDPE, LLDPE and HDPE are used to pack food, daily necessities, chemicals, gifts and industrial products, among others.

Globally, Qapco sells its LDPE products to over 4,500 customers in over 85 countries.

Its plant in Qatar is able to produce 400,000 tonnes a year, but from 2011, the capacity will nearly double to 700,000 tonnes per year.

Meanwhile, Mohammed Yousef said the inauguration of the Malaysian office reflects the strategic importance of the country, and Southeast Asia in general, to Qapco.

The office will act as a one-stop centre to all Qapco customers in Malaysia, a job that was previously handled by Total of France, which owns 20 per cent of Qapco.

The company has a global marketing network of 26 self-operated offices and five regional warehouses, Yousef said.
