Ash clouds' impact was 'exaggerated' - Qatar Airways

The European aviation authorities “exaggerated” the impact the volcanic ash cloud would have on aircraft engines, the CEO of Qatar Airways told reporters in a press conference on Tuesday.
Speaking on the first day of the Arabian Travel Market in Dubai, Qatar Airways CEO Akbar Al Baker revealed that the Doha-based carrier lost $5m a day during the six-day closure of European airspace.
“There was no evidence the quantities of ash would affect the engines,” he said, pointing out that sandstorms occur in the Gulf on a regular basis, but have never stopped an aircraft engine.
“There was no scientific proof it would impact aircraft performance,” he said. “But safety comes first so we complied.”

Sekadar berkongsi.
Sempat borak dgn jiran pilot MAS bawa Airbus. Dia ckp pernah dulu in 80's flight British Airways 4 enjine mati masa lalu dkt ash cloud area Indon on dway to Australia luckily 2-3 engine dpt hidup semula tupun kapal terbang dah drop beribu2 kaki.
Ash clouds bole effect turbine engine, dkt power plant sama concept dgn foreign object damages. Member2 yg keja plant sure familiar dgn term tu.
