Host Nation Laws & Customs Empty Host Nation Laws & Customs

Post by Wak 2010-02-25, 13:57

As the weather becomes warmer, many of us will be going out to visit Qatar’s natural attractions and leisure facilities. For all of us who are guests in the State of Qatar, it is important that we remember at all times to observe the laws and customs of our host nation.

The following points come courtesy of the Doha Office Safety Team (DOST) and draw on advice from the US embassy in Qatar. The advice serves as a reminder to all of us living and travelling in the middle east, of the importance of respecting host nation customs, which in some cases differ from those of our respective countries.

• GESTURES: Incidents involving insults or obscene language or gestures often result in arrest, overnight imprisonment and/or fines whether the incident occurs between private parties or involves officers of the law. Insulting someone in public is considered a punishable offence.

• CONSERVATIVE CLOTHING: Islam and local traditions provide the foundation of Qatar’s customs, laws and practices. Foreign visitors and residents are expected to remain sensitive to Islamic beliefs and practices and not dress in a revealing or provocative manner, including the wearing of sleeveless shirts and blouses, halter tops and shorts. Western bathing attire should be worn only at hotel pools and private beaches.

1. Kedai-kedai buka dari pagi hingga zohor (around 12pm) tutup sehingga Asar(approx. 4pm) buka semula hingga lewat malam. During Ramadhan, buka lepas asar hingga 1-3 pagi.
2. Segala urusan perniagaan (bank, petrol station, shopping malls, restaurant termasuk urusan pejabat ) terhenti selama 20-30 min ketika setiap waktu sembahyang.
3. Ketika waktu semayang, Muttawa(religious police) akan usher semua orang untuk tunaikan semayang berjemaah.
5. Mot malls only allow families on weekends.
6. Wanita tak dibenarkan memandu kereta. Role ni diganti oleh ratusan ribu drivers from India, Pakistan & Indonesia untuk bawa isteri & anak-anak dara Pak Arab pegi shopping…….
8. Di shopping mall hanya lelaki bekerja even di underwear & lingerie and make up section.
9. Female Changing room tak dibenarkan even di big malls. What people do, try out kat toilet and then refund kalau tak muat.
10. Wanita tak boleh pergi gym…even all female gym dibanned.
11. Tailor shop kat sini ada kaunter macam kat post office sebab wanita takleh masuk dalam shop……
12. Only expat with family status boleh beli 4X4 or SUV……dan tak boleh own more than 1 .
13. Sambutan Maulud nabi & Maal Hijrah diconsider sebagai Bidaa’h….

Sambungan

14. Jenayah berat seperti membunuh & rogol hukumnya pancung kepala….last case I read about few months back dan dipancung lepas semayang jumaat di’chop-chop’ square (Municpality square Riyadh).
15. Jenayah seks –Adultery, bersekedudukan, minum arak etc hukumnya sebatan….ikut hakim berapa lashes. Ada first case libatkan rakyat Malaysia-Doktor & Nurse ….didakwa bersekedudukan di Jeddah. Housemate doctor tu also kena dakwa bersubahat .
Doktor dah cabut lari guna passport palsu, Housemate doctortu dah kantol kat airport guna passport palsu…..dengar-dengar dah dapat ‘royal pardon’…..
16. Honour killing masih diamalkan…..maksudnya pembunuhan untuk menebus maruah keluarga . http://www.arabianbusiness.com/561608-saudi-religious-police-blamed-in-honour-killing-of-sisters

Wak rasa Qatar ni more advance sikit dari Kuwait dan SA.. whatever your view and whatever happens pada mba & tanjong, kat Qatar tak sebegini.

Wak...so far first hand experience cukup baik dengan orang-orang tempatan Qatar....on the way pegi interview hari tu pun ada one Qatari guy actually tegur kat airport and we all borak-borak and exchange phone nos.He even called me when I was in Doha ajak pegi minum teh.

I have one Sri Lankan friend dah kerja merata-rata di MENA - dubai, saudi, kuwait, qatar & libya. In his opinion ranking ketaksuban as follows : Kuwaiti, Saudi, Qatari, Emirati.....Omani & Bahraini paling friendly....

So, kesian Mba....duduk kat tempat ranking paling atas....apa nak buat, mungkin ada hikmah tu.....InsyaAllah....

I personally feel that discrimination exists almost everywhere.
It is a matter of how we weight between the discrimination and the return that we can reapt while exposing ourselve to the discrimination.
If we play our card correctly, we will be able to get through it and achieve our target. Besides that, along the way, I believe that the process will also improve our own personality. At least, not to discriminate others.
My 2 cents comments ............ Host Nation Laws & Customs Icon_silent

Host Nation Laws & Customs Icon_cry

Pernah skali jadi depan mata Rizi, kat whole sale market kat dalam tmpt ikan...
minah indon ... dressing abaya... kena cuit...
minah tuu terkejut... and dok cari sapa dok cuit dia...
at the time minah tuu dok cari sapa cuit dia... mat buruh lain dok gesel2 kat dia...
waktu tuu mmg sesak ngan buruh2 nie...
lastly... minah tuu kuaq fish market tuu...

Honestly to me...
tgk apa terjadi kat KLCC 5-6 years ago... waktu CNY ngan Raya puasa jatuh pd minggu yg sama...
for 3d/2n buruh2 nie lepak kat KLCC...
Rizi ngan few frens (yang takder kampung nie)... nak lepak KLCC pun tak brani...
and at night time... lam kul 11mlm... kami kuaq round2 KL again.... scene sama gaks... mmg depa tido kat KLCC...

Msia dah teruk sgt... takdak kawalan langsung...
sbb terlalu ramai buruh asing...

The bright and the dark side of development.
